Born on 9 March near the town of Gzhatsk,
west of Moscow, USSR.

1941
May, I start school but my education
is interrupted one month later when
German troops invade Russia. I return
to school once the war is over.

1951
Leave technical school as a trained
metal worker and continue my studies at
an industrial college. In my spare time
I learn to fly aeroplanes.

1955
Graduate from college and join the Soviet
Air Force as a pilot.

1957
Become a test pilot.

1960
Join the cosmonaut corps and am
subsequently chosen as the first person
to journey into space.

1961
12 April, I orbit the Earth travelling
over 40,000 km (25,000 miles) in
108 minutes.

1960s
Work as head of the cosmonaut training
programme.

1968
27 March, I am killed when my aeroplane
crashes on a routine test flight.

After finishing your education you work in
a tyre factory and then a cotton mill. Your
hobby is parachuting.

1961
You (who by now are head of the
cotton-mill workers' parachute club and
secretary of the local Young Communists
League) enquire about becoming a
cosmonaut.

1962
16 February, you are one of five
female cosmonauts selected to train for
space flight.

1963
16 June, you are launched into space
on-board Vostok 6. You become the first
woman and the first civilian ever to fly in
space. You are made a Hero of the Soviet
Union on your return from space.

1967
Become the first space traveller to enter
politics when you are elected as a member
of the Supreme Soviet (the Soviet
parliament).

1971
Become a member of the Central
Committee of the Soviet Communist Party.

1974
Become a member of the Presidium of the
Supreme Soviet.

1989
Elected to the Congress of People's
Deputies.
