Born on 9 March near the town of Gzhatsk,
west of Moscow, USSR.
May, I start school but my education
is interrupted one month later when
German troops invade Russia. I return
to school once the war is over.
Leave technical school as a trained
metal worker and continue my studies at
an industrial college. In my spare time
I learn to fly aeroplanes.
Graduate from college and join the Soviet
Air Force as a pilot.
Become a test pilot.
Join the cosmonaut corps and am
subsequently chosen as the first person
to journey into space.
12 April, I orbit the Earth travelling
over 40,000 km (25,000 miles) in
